Interview Tips
Interviews can be a particularly harrowing experience, but with the correct preparation, and the use of professional techniques, interviews can be less stressful and used to a definite advantage to secure the position you desire.
Interview Preparation
- Be quite certain of the exact time and location of your interview, and call your interviewer by name. Arrive punctually.
- Try to find out as much as possible about the company you are visiting. Use references such as the company’s web site to give you background.
- Think about the questions you should ask in the interview before you get there. Remember the interview is a two-way street, and not only is the interviewer summing you up for the position, but that you must also determine if the position and company will suit you and your needs.
- Dress in business clothes and look professional. First impressions are absolutely vital. It is absolutely necessary to start off on the right footing and the best way to do this is to be visually pleasing to the eye.
- Ask questions regarding the position. Do not be content to simply sit there and listen to what is being said to you.
Helpful Pointers
- Be natural but animated when you are in an interview situation. Make the interviewer feel pleased that he/she has interviewed you, and make him/her BELIEVE you are the right person for the job.
- Think about your strengths and weaknesses before you go to the interview and be prepared to promote yourself when the opportunity arises. Don’t be too overpowering, but try to assure the interviewer that you are confident in your own abilities.
- It is best not to condemn your previous employer. Keep that information to yourself and be careful not to criticize past superiors – the interviewer may wonder what the problem was – your superior or you!
- Be enthusiastic when an interviewer offers the opportunity to learn something new. It is an opportunity for you to learn something new and at a later stage be paid for your new knowledge accordingly.
- It is extremely important to arrive on time as it says something about your general timekeeping habits.
- Above all, be positive, enthusiastic and professional. Display qualities that you would like to see in someone you were interviewing. Ask the question, "Would you employ yourself?" Remember that as Consultants we are here to advise you, but you are the one who must secure the position!
Good Luck!
